UAE freelancer corporate tax: turnover, salary and registration

Understand the AED 1 million UAE corporate tax turnover test for natural persons, salary exclusions and how registration differs from the tax calculation.

Working alone does not tell you which UAE corporate tax rules apply. A freelance designer trading personally, a consultant operating through a limited company and an employee doing occasional business work may all use the word “freelancer”, but the tax analysis begins with the legal person earning the income.

For a natural person conducting business or business activities in the UAE, the FTA natural-person guidance uses a business-turnover threshold exceeding AED 1 million during a calendar year. It identifies wages, Personal Investment Income and Real Estate Investment Income as excluded categories. This threshold concerns the person’s business turnover, not their profit or the total of every credit entering a bank account.

Establish who signed the contract and issued the invoice

Begin with the business licence, customer contracts and invoice details. Determine whether the customer buys from you as a natural person or from an incorporated entity. If a company earns the revenue, assess that company’s obligations; do not apply the personal AED 1 million test simply because you are its only owner and worker.

For work carried on personally, list all relevant activities and the capacity in which you conduct them. The FTA registration guide for natural persons explains how business turnover is considered across activities. Separate licences should not be treated as separate threshold allowances without establishing the legal position.

Keep this identity assessment short but explicit. A worksheet with legal name, licence, contracting party, bank account and activity is enough to reveal many inconsistencies. If invoices show a company name but payments arrive personally, resolve the accounting and contractual facts rather than choosing whichever threshold gives a preferred answer.

A salary-and-consulting example

Consider an illustrative UAE-resident natural person who receives AED 420,000 of employment wages and earns AED 850,000 of business turnover from consulting during 2026. Assume the wages genuinely belong to the excluded employment category and the consulting is the only relevant business activity. The consulting turnover does not exceed AED 1 million merely because salary and consulting together total AED 1.27 million.

Now add a second personally conducted business activity with AED 230,000 of turnover. Relevant business turnover becomes AED 1.08 million: AED 850,000 plus AED 230,000. Deducting business expenses before applying the turnover test would answer a different question. The person needs to assess registration on the combined business facts even if costs leave little profit.

This example does not establish the classification of every payment called a salary or investment return. Retain the employment contract and explain the relationship behind the receipts. If a payment is actually consideration for independent business services, its bank description should not settle its treatment.

Build a turnover worksheet that can be checked

Use one calendar-year schedule covering the relevant activities. Useful columns include invoice number, activity, customer, date, gross business amount, currency, accounting treatment and evidence reference. Reconcile the schedule to the records and explain differences from the bank receipts.

For example, a customer paying two invoices together creates one bank receipt but two sales references. An owner transfer creates a receipt without necessarily creating business turnover. A refund needs its relationship to the original transaction preserved. These are reasons to investigate differences, not instructions to exclude or include a receipt without reviewing its substance.

Review the worksheet during the year rather than waiting until December. When turnover approaches the threshold, resolve missing invoices, duplicated entries and uncertain classifications promptly. A year-end total assembled from memory is much harder to defend than a schedule maintained from the underlying documents.

Keep expenses in a separate schedule. They matter when preparing accounts and determining taxable income, but mixing them into a turnover threshold worksheet can obscure whether the scope test was crossed. The final file should make both calculations understandable to someone who did not prepare them.

Registration timing is a separate decision

The FTA registration-timeline clarification says a resident natural person meeting the turnover test applies by 31 March of the following calendar year. First exceeding the threshold during 2026 therefore generally points to 31 March 2027. Non-resident persons with a UAE permanent establishment have different conditions and a different application timetable.

Once the annual assessment shows registration is required, assign someone to gather the current documents and complete the official application. Verify the information against the licence and identity records. Keep the application acknowledgement, requests for further information and final registration evidence together.

Do not confuse the registration date with the return deadline or the amount of tax payable. Those are later parts of the compliance process. If the person already holds a VAT registration, do not assume that this automatically resolves corporate tax registration or that the two taxes share one threshold.

Relief and the tax calculation come after scope

A person whose relevant business turnover is AED 1.08 million may be a candidate for Small Business Relief, depending on residency, revenue history and the other conditions. Crossing the registration threshold and qualifying for relief can both be true. Relief requires its own period-specific assessment and election; it should not be used as a reason to avoid registration.

Where the ordinary calculation applies, the relevant input is reviewed taxable income. For illustration, AED 1.08 million turnover and AED 430,000 of reviewed taxable income are different figures. Without an applicable relief election, special regime or credits, the ordinary calculation on AED 430,000 would be (430,000 - 375,000) × 9%, or AED 4,950. This arithmetic is an illustration only; it does not establish whether the underlying expenses or adjustments are correct.

Before deciding whether to elect for relief, ask the reviewer about the consequences for the person’s broader tax position. A zero result in one simple example does not prove that an election is automatically the best choice in every period.

Keep VAT on its own checklist

A personally conducted business can be below the natural-person corporate tax threshold and still need VAT registration. VAT examines a different base and testing period. Use the corporate tax versus VAT comparison to build separate assessments rather than trying to reuse one annual profit total for both.

A practical monthly review should therefore ask three distinct questions: is the turnover schedule complete, has a registration or deadline action become due, and are there accounting or tax-treatment questions requiring review? Save the answer and assign the next action. This gives a freelancer a working process for staying organised without pretending that a threshold check replaces a complete tax return.
